• We finally arrived in Sopopaya, New Mexico. There was little to the town, other than an impressive college or university or something. We stopped at a gas station so that Gloria could put a few bucks of gas into her beast; I'm sure it got no better than three gallons to the mile. While I pumped the gas for her, she skipped over to the pay phone, dropped a dime and dialed a number.
• She was practically giddy as she skipped back to the car and I smiled at her enthusiasm. Then, with a wave, I left her and walked to the two lane blacktop we'd just left. I trod along the west bound side; I was just a little ways away from the Pacific Ocean and decided I wanted to see it. I've seen the Atlantic Ocean plenty of times; it's usually beautiful but can sometimes be gray and ugly and foreboding.
• I was about a mile down from where I'd started; maybe thirty or forty minutes later when I saw Gloria's beast get onto the blacktop, slowly making its way east. For some reason, I felt a heaviness as I watched Gloria leaving Sopopaya, New Mexico. I wondered what had happened; she'd indicated she intended to set up roots in Sopopaya with a beautiful blonde named Connie.
